After studying piano, singing, and choral conducting, Nicolas Frize was a student of Pierre Schaeffer (at the Paris Conservatoire and at GRM), then an intern with John Cage in New York (Villa Médicis Hors les murs in 1978).
Nicolas Frize conducts his research on three fronts. In terms of interpretation, the composition of many of his scores uses both traditional and graphic writing in order to bring together professionals and non-musicians. In terms of instrumentation, his taste for daring combinations leads him to bring together traditional instruments, choirs and voices, magnetic tapes and diverted objects... Finally, the places and circumstances are almost always the instigators of the music that is dedicated to them and the form that it takes.
